Packing
Things to bring to Ghana for a 2-3 week trip:
Paperwork
- airline eTicket/itinerary
- passport
- visa
- shot record showing yellow fever immunization
- letter of invitation from visa
- copy of main page of passport
- cash: crisp $100 bills to get best exchange rate
- notes of key information (phone numbers, meeting points, etc)
- notes for local language practice
Clothes
- hat
- sunglasses
- fast-drying underwear
- sturdy sneakers
- shower shoes
- pants (but not jeans, pref light and quick to dry) or skirts
- if shorts, be sure they are long — close to knee
- t-shirts (fine, but not sleeveless or tanktop)
- long sleeve shirts (pref., partly for reducing sun/dust exposure)
- rain shell (only april-sept)
Supplies
- Don't forget any personal prescription or over-the-counter drugs you need.

- deet-based bug repellant
- band aids
- pocket knife
- alcohol swaps
- medical tape
- duct tape
- iodine water tablets or ultraviolet purifier (requiring batteries)
- laundry detergent powder
- nylon scrubby/loofah to scrub dirt off you (especially important dec-feb)
- shampoo
- soap
- hand sanitizer (one or two small bottles to carry with you at all times)
- toliet paper
- toothbrush / toothpaste / floss
- water bottle
- skin moisturizer
Electronics
- flashlight
- cell phone: unlocked with SIM card slot
- AA battery-based cell phone charger an lithium batteries - see airline limitations on lithium batteries
- batteries for flashlight (can be purchased locally)
- surge protector if you bring any sensitive electronics (like laptop)
- US-UK electrical adapter; power converter if your electronics don't accept 220-240V
Bedding
- sleep sheet
- small travel pillow
Food
- snack food, including one protein/health bar per day, including travel days
Gifts
- any small gift of clothing, such as t-shirts with name of home town or school
