Bangalore Pilot Program

  • We will focus on the first 2 bullet points below from BEA Grant Application
    • School readiness by age 5
    • Early Care
    • Overall environment - communities with low crime, adequate food, etc.
  • Stats
    • 1 in 4 women are illiterate in Bangalore (better than stats for all India)
    • 1 in 4 children in 1st grade don't know their local alphabet
    • children of illiterate mothers don't get the same level of good healthcare.
  • chose 2 districts - one urban, one rural
  • We will target preschools w/highest rate of illiteracy.
    • Find 500 of these pairs of mothers and children who are illiterate and give them a device to share
    • They will learn together
    • every piece of content will have an advertisement at the beginning and end on healthcare, i.e., healthcare tips
  • looking for 3 outcomes
    • these children will perform better than literate groups on literacy tests when they enter 1st grade
    • early literacy skills materials will be supplemented with audio by our program
    • children work with their mothers so mothers also learn
  • Other notes
    • 5 kiosks (1/100)
    • we'll have to pay tax and import duties - on devices
    • assuming $15/device = $7500 = 50% of BEA grant
