Bangalore Pilot Program
- We will focus on the first 2 bullet points below from BEA Grant Application
- School readiness by age 5
- Early Care
- Overall environment - communities with low crime, adequate food, etc.
- Stats
- 1 in 4 women are illiterate in Bangalore (better than stats for all India)
- 1 in 4 children in 1st grade don't know their local alphabet
- children of illiterate mothers don't get the same level of good healthcare.
- chose 2 districts - one urban, one rural
- We will target preschools w/highest rate of illiteracy.
- Find 500 of these pairs of mothers and children who are illiterate and give them a device to share
- They will learn together
- every piece of content will have an advertisement at the beginning and end on healthcare, i.e., healthcare tips
- looking for 3 outcomes
- these children will perform better than literate groups on literacy tests when they enter 1st grade
- early literacy skills materials will be supplemented with audio by our program
- children work with their mothers so mothers also learn
- Other notes
- 5 kiosks (1/100)
- we'll have to pay tax and import duties - on devices
- assuming $15/device = $7500 = 50% of BEA grant
- need measurement & evaluation strategy
